CAMI Health / The Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies
As Secretariat of the Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT), CAMI Health leads a global, product neutral collaboration that advances the development of Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs), an innovative class of products that deliver varied combinations of HIV prevention, other STI prevention, and contraception. MPTs promise to improve the lives of women and their families worldwide.
In this role, CAMI Health serves as the central body that researchers, product developers, funders, policymakers, and advocates rely on for objective technical guidance and strategic planning related to MPTs. By facilitating interdisciplinary partnerships, CAMI Health enables experts from across the family planning, HIV, and STI fields to strategize around the unique technological, market access, and regulatory challenges presented by combined prevention product development, thus refining the pathway to impactful MPT development.
Advancing the Development and Availability of MPT Products for Those at Highest Unmet Need Around the Globe
This CAMI project seeks to advance the development and availability of multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) products that simultaneously address the need to prevent unintended pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in high-risk regions of the world. It will identify and respond to MPT scientific priority issues and gaps and help coordinate the major MPT supporting organizations to optimize current resources and efforts as well as to mobilize new resources to expand multisectoral support and investment in MPTs.
Developing and Introducing Multipurpose Prevention Technologies for Women and Girls
This multi-year project headed by CAMI Health will advance and develop the introduction of Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) for women and girls who have the highest unmet needs. The objective is to accelerate action around priority challenges and gaps in the MPT field.
Health Literacy around MPTs and Simultaneous Prevention of Unintended Pregnancies and STIs
CAMI has developed outreach materials to raise awareness about the simultaneous risk of unintended pregnancy and STIs, and the need for MPTs. Examples include:
- Global Reproductive Health Diaries: Development and distribution of educational and advocacy materials.
- Sister to Sister Photo novellas: We are currently seeking support to expand these novellas in different regions using mHealth.

Product Development and Access to Multipurpose Prevention Technologies
CAMI Health continues to serve as the Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies secretariat with efforts to advance the development and support of Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPT) with a focus on contraceptive MPTs in alignment with NICHD priorities. This will be accomplished by enhancing collaborative partnerships through regular information exchange between stakeholders as well as through scientific and technical activities including convenings around priority issues and advocacy.
Supporting CAMI Health
This project is to advance the MPT scientific agenda and facilitate coordination and collaboration among key partners to enhance support for the field: 1) Assess feasibility of expanding the MPT Product Pipeline Database to include work in China and Russia; 2) Landscape analysis of MPT-related projects and activities internationally; and 3) Development and production of support materials critical in MPT activities for CAMI and IMPT members in the US and across the globe.
Here's How We're Making a Difference
Leading the Way to Better Reproductive Health Technologies
Through the Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT), PHI's CAMI-Health is leading a collaborative product development pipeline for Multi-purpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) that combine birth control and HIV/STI prevention in single products, like gels, rings and injectables—so women in the United States around the world can control family size and achieve economic independence.
Since the launch of the Initiative in 2009, PHI's CAMI Health has served as the Secretariat and neutral convener of the IMPT, providing central leadership and coordination to the MPT field. Comprised of members from across disciplines and more than 15 countries, the IMPT is the central body that funders, developers, advocates, policymakers, and other SRH stakeholders rely on for objective technical guidance and strategic planning related to MPTs.
The network currently includes over 1200 experts in sexual and reproductive health, has convened more than 30 technical consultations, and presented at over 35 conferences and webinars for a total audience of over 2,000 participants.
