PHI's Rise Up Announces Partnership with the Gates Foundation and Michelle Obama's Let Girls Learn
November 28, 2016
PHI's Rise Up is thrilled to launch a new initiative to end child marriage in Malawi funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and in collaboration with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let Girls Learn Initiative. Rise Up received $2.5 million from the Gates Foundation to create ENGAGE (Enabling Girls to Advance Gender Equality), an innovative approach to enabling Malawian girls to end early marriage and finish school. ENGAGE builds on Rise Up's work empowering adolescent girls in Malawi, which resulted in landmark legislation that outlaws child marriage nationally.
Through ENGAGE, Rise Up will invest in visionary Malawian leaders, funding their innovative strategies to reduce child marriage. Rise Up will also expand partnership with the Girls' Empowerment Network to enable adolescent girls to strengthen their leadership, stay in school, and delay marriage. This innovative approach integrates an SMS and mass radio campaign led by Youth Tech Health and a rigorous external evaluation led by the International Center for Research on Women.
