PHI's FACES for the Future Coalition delivers the highly successful FACES program model to communities seeking to prepare high school students for entry into the health professions by developing their own pipeline programs. FACES incorporates best practices in adolescent medicine, innovative pedagogy, and community engagement.

Taken together, the model addresses the diverse needs of young people interested in healthcare careers, and prepares students to meet the challenges of impending health workforce shortages and worsening health disparities. Learn more about their work in South Alameda County.

South Alameda County FACES is one of the newest FACES programs, established just this year. This program currently serves students at Alameda High School, San Leandro High School and working towards Encinal High School. The program’s partners include the Alameda Health System, Alameda Hospital, Alameda Unified School District, and San Leandro Hospital.

During the past few months, the students were trained under our “boot camp” series of health competencies, which included workshops such as patient-centered care, vitals and brain anatomy.

Last week, joined by the students’ teachers, families, and friends, we celebrated the completion of their training with a Blue Coat Ceremony. Each student received a blue doctor’s coat, which marked their preparedness and readiness for internships in the next coming weeks. This also makes them the inaugural class for this program.

Hear from Reatha Conn, MPH, the program coordinator of the South Alameda County FACES program:

“As the new Program Coordinator for the FACES for the Future program at South Alameda County, I am very excited to introduce the 2017 Health Scholars. Last week, the health scholars participated in the Blue Coat Ceremony and will soon begin to intern at Alameda Hospital. The health scholars have trained and prepared for their internships, and they are excited and committed to become the future FACES of the Alameda Health System. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to develop the program with this first cohort of students. As much as I inspire them, they continue to inspire me. Cheers to Alameda’s future physical therapists, surgeons, and healthcare providers!”

Also, a big thank you to our partners for working so effortlessly to allow this experience for the students! We look forward to the great stories that are to come and will share them as we hear them.
