Turning great ideas into healthier communities

PHI Mourns Passing of UNPFA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin

June 05, 2017

The public health community, the country of Nigeria and reproductive health advocates around the world have lost a champion and a leader with today’s passing of Nigeria’s Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin. The Public Health Institute sends our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Dr Osotimehin was Nigeria’s former Health Minister, current executive director of the United Nations Population Fund and Under-Secretary General of the United Nations. The Public Health Institute was honored to work closely with Professor Osotimehin in 2006, when he joined the cohort of the Public Health Institute’s International Family Planning Leadership Program of Asia and Africa to develop a five-year Nigerian strategic plan that links reproductive health with HIV/AIDS prevention. “Dr. Osotimehin’s tireless efforts to strengthen reproductive health and prevent HIV changed the course of millions of lives, particularly women and girls.” said PHI CEO and President Dr. Mary A. Pittman. “We are immensely saddened to hear of his passing, but it is certain that his legacy and impact on the field will live on.”
