"Control over when and if to have children is a basic human right": PHI Statement on Withdrawal of Contraception Mandate

October 06, 2017

STATEMENT FROM NORA CONNORS, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC POLICY AND PARTNERSHIPS

"The Public Health Institute stands firmly opposed to the Trump Administration's new rule issued today by HHS which limits the Affordable Care Act's contraception mandate—effectively guaranteeing a drastic decrease in the number of women in the US who are able to access free contraceptives.

"Control over when and if to have children is a basic human right. Today’s rule will disproportionately affect low-income women, women of color and other economically-disadvantaged groups who may lack the means to pay out-of-pocket.

"Allowing the religious objections of a few to affect the personal health care decisions of many sets a dangerous precedent, particularly when it is counter to data and evidence. When it comes to supporting the health of women and girls, we know what works. Research shows that access to affordable reproductive care including contraception unlocks educational and economic opportunities—not just for women, but for their families and communities as well. We must build on that opportunity, not go backwards. It is an integral component of moving towards a healthy, equitable society for all."
