STATEMENT FROM MARY A. PITTMAN, CEO AND PRESIDENT, PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE

“The Public Health Institute (PHI) welcomes Dr. Sonia Angell as the new director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

“Dr. Angell brings to the role an extensive history in public health leadership, including her dedication to preventing chronic disease, such as cardiovascular disease and hypertension, in the U.S. and across the world. She also has deep expertise in building effective community-level public health initiatives, including overseeing the New York City-led National Salt Reduction Initiative, of which PHI is a member.

“CDPH plays a critical role in advancing public health and health equity across the state. As federal efforts seek to undermine the health, humanity and dignity of vulnerable communities, California’s leadership is more important than ever. PHI and its programs have partnered with CDPH for more than fifty years, including our ongoing close collaboration with the California Cancer Registry, the Health in All Policies Taskforce, and nutrition education initiatives. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership to build a healthier, more equitable California under Dr. Angell’s direction.”
