Carol Emmott Fellowship

The Carol Emmott Fellowship offers transformative developmental opportunities and mentorships to help women leaders overcome barriers and develop high-impact careers in health. The Fellowship identifies and selects women with significant potential as future senior health leaders to participate in an intensive 14-month fellowship program. The program focuses on increasing participants’ leadership capacities while building a network of professional peers and career mentors for ongoing support and collaboration.  more

PHI’s FACES for the Future Awarded Federal Grant to Expand Work Transitioning Underserved Minority Youth into Health Careers

Linh Dao learned how to read x-rays as a teenager in an Oakland, California high school program called FACES for the Future. She was the first graduate of the FACES program to be accepted to medical school, and in 2013, Dr. Dao returned to Oakland to begin her residency in internal medicine.

In September, PHI’s FACES for the Future Coalition was awarded a multi-year, 2.5 million dollar grant through the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to nationally replicate its programs transitioning high school students from underserved communities into health fields.   more

Alameda County Faith Leaders Celebrate Caregivers in First Of Its Kind Community-Faith-Health System Partnership

On Sunday, August 30, the Alameda County Care Alliance (ACCA) hosted faith leaders, community members and health organizations for a health expo and celebration of caregivers. The ACCA, undertaken in part by PHI's Center for Technology and Aging, is a coalition of five churches representing over 35,000 people in Alameda County, which formed the Advanced Illness Care Program based on findings from a community needs assessment.

Sue Grinnell Joins PHI as Director of Business Strategy and Technology at New Population Health Innovation Lab

The Public Health Institute is pleased to announce that Sue Grinnell, MPH, is Director of Business Strategy and Technology at its new Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL), effective August 3, 2015. Grinnell comes to PHI with 30 years of experience in public health, most recently as special assistant for Health Transformation and Innovation at the Washington State Department of Health. "Sue is precisely the right person to help lead PHI's work in building healthier populations," said PHI president and CEO Mary A. Pittman, DrPH.  more

PHI's Alcohol Research Group Study Provides No-Cost Alcohol Treatment for Women

PHI's Alcohol Research Group recently received a federal grant from the National Institutes of Health to provide free outpatient alcohol treatment to 220 women who are experiencing alcohol problems. This is a confidential study and is looking at the effectiveness of a talk therapy called Motivational Interviewing. Californians Support More Money for Low-Income Families to Buy Fruits, Vegetables and Other Healthy Foods

Ninety percent of participants in California’s nutrition assistance program and 92 percent of non-participants support an increase in the amount of money CalFresh recipients have to spend on fresh produce, according to an article published by the American Journal of Public Health.   more
