MagaƱa Honored with Hispanics in Philanthropy Giver Award

January 22, 2015

Tomás Magaña, MD, founding director of PHI's FACES for the Future Coalition, has been named a 2015 HIP Giver by the organization Hispanics in Philanthropy. The honor is given to "living examples of generosity, kindness and entrepreneurial spirit that binds together our families, our communities and the Americas." He and other recipients will be honored February 27 at the Celebrate Giving, Strengthen Latino Leadership conference and gala in San Francisco.  more

The Public Health Institute  (PHI) has received funding from the University of North Carolina and a private non-profit foundation to evaluate the implementation of the recently approved soda tax in Berkeley, California, the nation's first such significant excise tax on sugary drinks.   more

New Initiative Aligns Health Equity and Development

From childcare to jobs, healthy food to chronic disease prevention, community development to transit, many U.S. communities are investing in health and equity in our most vulnerable communities. But could they be doing it better? How can communities align similar interventions for greater impact and less cost?

Does our future health and economy depend on what we drink?

Soda: The Series offers conversations about sugary drinks and their impact on the health of our families, community and environment.  Experts will discuss the science of sugary drinks, tactics of the soda industry, and disease prevention efforts. These events take place in the run-up to the November election, when Berkeley will vote on Measure D, a tax on sugary drinks. Soda: the Series is sponsored by the Berkeley Healthy Child Coalition, Ecology Center, Public Health Institute, Prevention Institute and Small Planet Institute.

Advancing Efforts to Integrate Community Health Workers into Team-based Care Delivery

The California Health Workforce Alliance is continuing its work to advance the recently published findings, analysis and recommendations from its statewide assessment of the roles and contributions of Community Health Workers/ Promotores (CHWs) in healthcare safety net institutions. During July and August, CHWA will convene three regional technical consultation meetings across the state with safety net providers, administrators, and frontline workers to solicit inputs related to the integration of CHWs into team-based care delivery models and the documentation of their contributions to the achievement of the Triple Aim objectives.    more

And that worldwide, women and adolescents at risk for unintended pregnancy are often simultaneously at risk for an STI, including HIV? 

Join us for a panel and reception featuring Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan (WHO), Ina Park (CDPH/UCSF), Bethany Young Holt (CAMI/PHI) and others to discuss innovative prevention strategies that can simultaneously address risk for unintended pregnancies and STIs, including HIV - multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs).

Dr. Thomas Clausen in residence at ARG as Fulbright Fellow

Dr. Thomas Clausen will be in residence at PHI's Alcohol Research Group as a Fulbright Fellow from 8/1/14-6/30/15. 

Dr. Clausen is a professor at the Norwegian Centre for Addiction Research at the University of Oslo in Norway . He received both his MD and PhD from the University of Oslo. His research interests include treatment modalities for substance abuse, including Opioid Maintenance Treatment (OMT), and their effectiveness at reducing dependence, mortality and criminal activity. He is also interested in alcohol use and mental health in developing countries, particularly in Africa. He has a current appointment as a National Expert to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction for Norway, and an ongoing collaboration with the WHO to investigate alcohol use and health outcomes using data from the Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE). 

He will collaborate with ARG Scientists also working with SAGE data during his residency at ARG.   more

Lynn Silver Joins PHI

The Public Health Institute is pleased to announce that Lynn Silver MD, MPH, is joining PHI as a Senior Advisor for Chronic Disease and Obesity, and as the Director of PHI's Project LEAN. Dr. Silver will be working to leverage PHI's existing work and assets into a coordinated platform that will maximize reach and impact. She will build on Project LEAN's strong legacy of success achieved over more than two decades, particularly in the policy arena. She will also enhance and strengthen PHI's portfolio of programs in chronic disease, obesity prevention and global NCDs, with a particular emphasis on aligning existing domestic and global health programs.    more
