Alan Houser, MS, MPH

Alan Houser, MS, MPH, is project director of C/NET Solutions, which makes hospital cancer registry software for collecting and reporting cancer data to incidence and other central cancer databases. Houser has worked in the cancer registration field for three decades, beginning in 1981 as database manager for the cancer registry at the University of California, San Francisco. He later worked at the California Cancer Registry, the San Francisco Oakland Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Registry, and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

Houser returned to the C/NET project in 1995 to build a website featuring art by breast cancer survivors and a search interface for finding clinical trials, with funding from the Department of the Army.  Houser then became involved in the registry software design again, developing new new interfaces and other features in the program. In 2005, he took the lead in negotiating a contract with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to revise their Edits Tools for registries at all levels, work that continues today.

Houser has also been involved in national data standards work, including participation in North American Association of Cantral Cancer Registry’s Edits Work Group, the Uniform Data Standards Committee, and the Collaborative Stage IT Committee.

Houser recieved his master's degrees in public health (epidemiology) and science (biochemistry) from the University of California, Berkeley.
