Turning great ideas into healthier communities

Expertise

Capacity Building & Training

With diverse public health programs spanning the globe, PHI understands how strong leadership and organizational management can enhance the success and sustainability of public health interventions. Our capacity building efforts are geared for communities, nonprofit organizations, local governments, and individuals engaged in improving the public's health. PHI’s capacity building programs and initiatives target a variety of populations and disciplines, including aging populations, infectious disease, adolescent health, community health, global health, women’s health and family planning.

PHI is an expert provider of organizational learning and development strategies, leadership training, technical support, peer learning, research and evaluation. PHI’s goal is to make public health partners more effective at achieving their mission and creating lasting change. PHI’s capacity building programs have helped hundreds of organizations and thousands of public health practitioners working in settings from remote communities in Africa to U.S. federal agencies.

Our expertise includes:

  • Organizational learning and development opportunities: We provide consultation and technical assistance in creating diverse learning communities and peer-to-peer exchanges, as well as facilitation for group decision-making.

  • Leadership training: Through in-person educational programs and one-on-one coaching for individuals and teams, our experts can help to build up organizational and community leaders. We also specialize in implementing "train the-trainer" programs to increase overall capacity.

  • Evaluation support research: PHI offers ongoing and as-needed evaluation to inform program improvement or policy development.

  • Technical assistance: We provide training curricula, guides and toolkits, and technology platforms for interactive learning.

Here's How We're Making a Difference

Building Stronger Nonprofit Organizations

Close to 90 percent of the over 100 nonprofit executive directors receiving organizational development services from PHI’s Center for Civic Partnerships attributed the services to helping them achieve their top organizational priorities in the year after formal support ended.

Designing Fellowship Programs to Support Healthy Eating and Healthy Aging

The Public Health Institute manages a fellowship program for The Health Trust of Santa Clara County (THT), which supports healthy eating and healthy aging activities in low-income neighborhoods of Santa Clara and northern San Benito counties. Fellows are PHI employees who work directly with THT staff at the THT offices, providing expertise and operations support for THT's core programs. PHI provides Fellows with guidance and professional development opportunities. Evaluation of the 2016 Fellows revealed that they were all highly rated by The Health Trust.

Developing the Next Generation of Global Health Leaders

Since 2007, hundreds of public health professionals recruited, placed and supported by PHI’s Global Health Fellows Program I & II have worked around the globe in critical U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) programs in HIV/AIDS, family planning, maternal and child health, and more.

GHFP-II helps USAID foster the next generaton of diverse global health professionals, by supporting and sustaining the efficacy of its current and future health programs. 38% of GHFP-II fellows and interns, working around the world, represent ethnic minorities.
