 Summary

Internship Project Description

Tracking California’s California Sickle Cell Data Collection (CA SCDC) program collects and analyzes data on individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) to improve understanding of their healthcare needs, enhance service delivery, and inform policy decisions. By leveraging data partnerships and engaging stakeholders, the program aims to address health disparities and improve outcomes for people living with SCD in California.

The intern will work with CA SCDC staff and community-based organization (CBO) partners to develop and create tailored communication products that convey SCDC data to meet the unique needs of CBO audiences. This project will focus on translating data insights into actionable formats, such as data briefs or infographics, to support awareness, advocacy, and service improvements for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). Additionally, the intern may contribute to other initiatives such as social media content creation. The intern will be mentored and supervised by the Division Director.

Learning Opportunity, Measurable Goals and/or Outcomes of the Internship

  • Create at least two impactful communication products (e.g., data briefs, infographics) that translate SCDC data into engaging and actionable content.
  • Gain valuable knowledge about sickle cell disease (SCD), its impact on communities, and the role of data in informing services and policies.
  • Develop skills in engaging stakeholders and community partners by participating in the full cycle of product creation—from gathering partner input to co-developing, testing, and disseminating the final product.
  • Present the completed communication products to community organization partners and SCDC staff, incorporating their feedback to refine and improve the work product.
