Rise Up is at an exciting time of growth, as we expand our team and global impact. Rise Up is currently a program of PHI that plans to shift operating processes to a separate 501(c)(3) organization in 2025. This position will play a key role in leading the accounting team and managing accounting related activities of Rise Up, both before and after the transition to the new 501(c)(3) organization.

Position Summary

The Senior Manager, Accounting Operations will build and manage effective internal accounting systems and processes and oversee accounting activities for the new organization. Responsible for internal control, general ledger account setup and maintenance, general accounting and financial analysis, reconciliations, annual audits, and overall financial reporting. The incumbent will ensure compliance with GAAP standards, a high level of integrity, timeliness of financial reporting, and internal controls.  Perform and ensure timely month and year-end closing processes.  Ensure the organization complies with all tax reporting, preparation of grant budgets and invoices, preparation of payroll, accounts payable disbursements, procurement, and preparation of all worksheets for annual audit and other reporting needs of the organization.

The Senior Manager will implement improved accounting policies and procedures to ensure that generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and other accounting requirements from authoritative accounting bodies are followed. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting and financial management record at a nonprofit organization. This position will report to the Director of Operations.

This is a remote, regular full-time position based in the United States. Candidates in the U.S. are welcome to apply and will be considered, but candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area are preferred. The incumbent is expected to travel about 10% of the time domestically and internationally to team retreats and workshops.

Full salary range for this position: $100,661 to $151,630 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $100,661 (minimum) to $126,146 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Management (35%)

  • As part of the onboarding phase conduct assessment of Rise Up systems for financial reporting and granting capabilities and integration for future needs, examining the organization’s financial history, including past challenges, growth patterns, and legacy decisions that influence current operations.
  • Leverage institutional knowledge to design and implement accounting practices that respect the organization’s intricacies and maintain continuity.
  • Oversee and ensure quality control over critical accounting activities, including audits, reconciliations, expenses tracking, tax, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support the annual budgeting process, manage budget-to-actual reporting, monitor progress, and present operational metrics to senior leadership.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting.
  • Complete and submit federal 990 and local annual tax returns.
  • Manage annual financial auditing process with an external auditing firm including external financial statements.
  • Manage the finance policies and handbook to ensure regular updates and compliance by Accounting/Finance teams and broader teams.
  • Support the Director of Operations in budget development, financial operations and in preparing reports for the Finance and Investment Committees and Board.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual analysis of indirect cost recovery pools.

General Ledger (25%)

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Close the books each month and, at year-end, ensuring the proper recognition and recording of all financial transactions by the set timelines.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations on all balance sheet accounts and other accounts each month.
  • Supervise the process and accounting for revenue transfers and reclasses.
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing.
  • Supervise the review and preparation of bi-weekly payroll data to ensure accurate and timely uploads into the PEO systems.

Reporting, Analysis, and Financial Systems Implementation (15%)

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed, and recommend solutions to improve or automate accounting functions using technology.
  • Review financial reporting materials and metrics for funders.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports accurately and timely; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of financial status.
  • Develop and monitor business performance metrics through dashboard development and monitoring.

Internal Control and Accounting Operations (15%)

  • Act as the primary subject matter expert with regards to reporting functionality, creating reports, updates and maintenance of the accounting software.
  • Develop policies and procedures, business process documentation, and executive summaries of finance and accounting processes.
  • Recommend and implement improvements for accounting processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Establish new accounting system to support the organization’s priorities, identify workflow and process improvements, and engage in implementation.
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations on other accounting and financial activities as needed.

Supervision and Team Leadership (10%)     

  • Responsible for building an accounting function for the new organization and hiring a team of up to 3 accounting professionals.
  • Hire, train, and retain skilled accounting staff, and direct the day-to-day operations of the accounting team, in the areas of journal entries, account reconciliations, financial reporting, bank reconciliations and business filing.
  • Lead team members to develop skills and increase their knowledge base; clarify roles and responsibilities while building a supportive team environment.

Other

  • Travel about 10% of the time domestically and internationally to team retreat and workshop.
  • Work changing schedules as required by business needs in different time zones.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7 years of accounting and/or finance management experience, including experience with managing budgeting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, tax reporting, audits, financial reporting, payroll, and regulation compliance.
  • 5 years of experience working in the accounting/finance department of 501(c)(3) organization(s).
  • 3 years of experience supervising an accounting and/or finance team of at least 3 people.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, or substitute with 4 additional years of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong management skills in hiring, training, mentoring, developing staff and managing their performance.
  • Experience in selecting and implementing accounting software in a non-profit accounting environment.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural and/or international environment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply GAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Knowledge and experience with state and federal government requirements, including knowledge of OMB circular, grants administration, and accounting.
  • Experience with federal audit and compliance requirements for non-profits.
  • Experience in grants management and reporting of multiple funding sources.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial policies, practices, and systems.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger account analysis and reconciliation.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills, particularly in the use of accounting and financial software packages.
  • Expertise with accounting software or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as SAGE Intacct or others.
  • Strong computer skills in using Microsoft Office, especially Excel, V Look-up, and Macros.
  • Understanding of international ethics standards.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and the board.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial data and make sound recommendations.
  • Familiarity with financial planning, analysis, and reporting software, such as Spreadsheet Server preferred.
  • Familiarly with month end close project management software, such as FloQast or others preferred.
  • Ability to work changing schedules as required by business needs in different time zones.
  • Willingness and ability to travel about 10% of the time domestically and internationally for work retreats.
  • Must be able to pass the background check required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8-10 years of accounting and/or finance experience in nonprofit organization(s), preferably with global/international organization(s).
  • Experience with starting up an accounting function for a 501(c)(3) organization, preferably with global/international organization or following transition from a fiscal sponsor.
  • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and/or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
