Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute

This subcontract to the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability provided local level disability data to independent living, vocational rehabilitation, public health and emergency management agencies. Through this agreement, our Center authored the 2015, 2016, and 2017 Disability Statistics Annual Reports.

The Center on Disability worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other partners on a National Public Health Practice and Resource Center on Health Promotion, Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity for People with Disabilities. The Center created an implementation manual and guidelines for ensuring that people with disabilities are included in prevention efforts.

The Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute through a grant by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is providing emergency preparedness training and resources to vulnerable Access and Functional Needs (AFN) populations through local community-based organizations (CBOs) in El Dorado county. Using the local CBOs to provide 1-on-1 information and group training, the grant aims to engage 30,000 individuals with AFN in the county through December 2020.

The Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute through a grant by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is providing emergency preparedness training and resources to vulnerable Access and Functional Needs (AFN) populations through local community-based organizations (CBOs) in Nevada county. Using the local CBOs to provide 1-on-1 information and group training, the grant aims to engage 18,000 individuals with AFN in the county through December 2020.

The Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute through a grant by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is providing emergency preparedness training and resources to vulnerable Access and Functional Needs (AFN) populations through local community-based organizations (CBOs) in Alameda county. Using the local CBOs to provide 1-on-1 information and group training, the grant aims to engage 250,000 individuals with AFN in the county through December 2020.

The Center on Disability at PHI conducted critical research on emergency preparedness behaviors of people with disabilities who use personal assistance services for the Center on Personal Assistance Services at the University of California, San Francisco. The research resulted in a published paper in the American Journal of Disaster Medicine in 2013.

The Center conducted a research project using expert interviews and focus groups to determine the applicability of the Guide to Community Preventive Services (the Community Guide) to disability populations. The research resulted in a paper with the CDC in the American Journal Of Preventive Medicine in 2017.
