Join the IMPT for Reproductive Health, a project of PHI’s CAMI Health, at the MPT Summit to learn from stakeholders from across the fields of HIV, other STIs, and contraception. The meeting is sponsored by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the NIH. The Summit will build on the work accomplished over the past 15 years to advance the field of MPTs and explore what is needed to help ensure MPTs reach the hands of users.
This event is free and capped at 175 in-person attendees.
Date: June 24, 2024 – June 25, 2024
Time: 8:30 am ET (6/24) – 3:30 pm ET (6/25)
Location: 5601 Fishers Lane, Great Hall (1D13), Rockville, MD, 20852 (virtual registration also available)
RegisterMultipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) are innovative products designed to deliver combinations of HIV and other STI preventatives, and/or contraception. Currently, there are two dozen MPTs in development that utilize a range of delivery platforms such as intravaginal rings, films, gels, and implants. These cutting-edge products have the potential to address rising STI rates, disproportionately high HIV rates in some communities, and provide new contraception tools—all at the same time. Despite the challenging journey of their development, MPTs possess the capacity to transform women’s health significantly through their multifunctional attributes.
The meeting is sponsored by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the NIH and will occur at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) Fishers Lane Conference Center.
This Summit aligns with the priority of the recent Executive Order to advance research in contraception (EO 14101 – Strengthening Access to Affordable, High-Quality Contraception and Family Planning Services), the NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research, and the importance of multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) mentioned throughout the HHS STI National Strategic Plan 2021-2025.
Learn More: PHI’s CAMI Health & MPTs
PHI’s CAMI Health is dedicated to improving the health of women worldwide through collective global action: addressing complex public health problems that impact women and their families by building and leading learning networks. Learn more about CAMI Health.
An inaugural meeting organized by CAMI Health in 2009 launched the field of multipurpose prevention technologies, or MPTs, which are an innovative class of products that deliver varied combinations of HIV prevention, other STI prevention, and contraception and have the potential to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide.
Given the limited resource landscape and technical complexities that situate the MPT field, a product-neutral coordinating body called the IMPT was launched in parallel. As IMPT Secretariat, CAMI Health has managed the development of an effective mechanism for the IMPT to advance the field of MPTs by systematically identifying pressing technical issues and accelerating prudent action by examining evidence, developing guidance, and facilitating critical conversations with appropriate experts across disciplines and sectors.

Podcast: Meeting Reproductive Health Needs with MPTs
Do women get STIs as often as men? Why do women need MPTs? Aren’t condoms enough? What do these technologies look like? On this episode of “One World, One Health” podcast, Dr. Bethany Young Holt of PHI’s CAMI Health discusses MPTs that combine contraceptives with sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention. Hear the podcast.
Expanding the Pipeline for MPTs
This article, published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections, focuses on new pharmaceutical approaches currently being explored for potential activity against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections not yet included in existing multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) candidates.
