Tune in to hear PHI’s Bethany Young Holt explore the latest developments in the field of Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs), products that provide contraception along with protection from STIs and/or HIV. The origins of MPTs and the current research/development pipeline will also be discussed.
This webinar is hosted by the California Prevention Training Center (CAPTC).
Learning Objectives
- Provide evidence of the need for products that simultaneously address multiple health risks, such as HIV, other STIs, and unplanned pregnancy
- Introduce Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) and the product candidates currently in development for prevention of HIV, other STIs and/or unintended pregnancies
- Describe and implement the Initiative for MPTs (IMPT) and its publicly-available tools for tracking the MPT product development pipeline, while summarizing the current pipeline profile, recent scientific breakthroughs, and the potential impact of MPTs for women around the world
- Be able to outline next steps for key stakeholders in STI prevention and related health fields, with a focus on tangible priority actions that will help bring MPTs to the hands of end-users
Featured Speaker: PHI's Bethany Young Holt
Bethany Young Holt, PhD, MPH brings mission-driven program leadership and over 25 years of experience to address complex public health issues and inform research and policy priorities, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and health equity. In the early 2000s, Bethany founded CAMI Health, an organization dedicated to advancing the health of women and girls worldwide. She subsequently co-founded the Initiative for MPTs (IMPT), the first & only initiative dedicated to advancing the field of multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) - products that combine HIV prevention, other STI prevention, and/or contraception. Bethany has conducted numerous landscape assessments, strategic action assessments, and has been Principal Investigator and/or contributed to an array of qualitative and quantitative research studies. With a wide-range of public speaking experience, Bethany has been an academic lecturer and given dozens of presentations at scientific and public health conferences around the world; and her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and featured in the popular press, including Biology of Reproduction; Stanford Social Innovation Review; the New York Times; and Vogue. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mauritania, and has had traineeships with the National Cancer Institute at the NIH, the Institute Pasteur (Senegal), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Bethany obtained her PhD in Epidemiology, and MPH in Maternal and Child Health from University of California Berkeley.
