The stories we tell shape how people understand health, equity, and their communities. In a time of increasing polarization, advancing racial and health equity requires more than just data—it demands compelling stories that connect across differences and drive collective action.
Crafting a Health Equity Centered Narrative, a factsheet created by PHI’s Build Healthy Places Network, is designed to help practitioners bridge divides, challenge harmful myths, and create narratives that foster belonging, trust, and collaboration.

This resource offers guidance and strategies for communicating across sectors, building solidarity and interdependence, and identifying shared values and beliefs to navigate unproductive mindsets and harmful myths that limit progress.
By focusing on shared values and an asset-based approach, the factsheet highlights the power of participatory storytelling and the importance of co-creating inclusive, community-driven narratives. It also explores four core principles—Courage, Co-creation, Belonging, and Community—that support effective, equity-centered conversations.
Values drive policy. It’s not a science, it’s about understanding what people value in their communities that begin to shape hearts and minds.Roundtable participant
